The Florida Hair Survival Kit
How to protect your hair from Florida humidity, sunshine, salt water and pool days.
Living in Florida has its perks—sunshine, beach days and afternoons by the pool—but our hair is dealing with a lot behind the scenes. Between intense UV exposure, humidity, chlorine, salt water and even hard water, keeping your hair healthy here requires a little extra strategy.
The goal isn’t to avoid everything we love about Florida. It’s to give your hair the right protection before, during and after so you can enjoy it without sacrificing your color or hair health.
Here are my Florida hair survival essentials.
Start With Moisture
Sun, salt water and chlorine can leave the hair feeling dry, rough and more prone to tangling. I love the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Shampoo + Conditioner for keeping hair soft, hydrated and manageable without making your routine complicated.
Think of these as your everyday foundation for replenishing moisture and keeping sun-exposed hair feeling healthy.
Never Skip Your Leave-In + UV Protection
Before heading outside, reach for the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer or UNITE Hair U Oil | Lightweight Argan-Infused Oil for Hydration, Shine & Frizz Control.
It helps protect against heat and UV exposure while adding moisture, reducing frizz and making hair easier to detangle. I especially love this step for blondes, highlighted hair and anyone whose color tends to feel dry or fade quickly in the Florida sun.
Apply it after washing and before styling—and keep it in rotation during beach and pool season.
Before You Swim, Get Your Hair Wet
One of the easiest hair-saving tricks is also one of the simplest: wet your hair with fresh water before getting into the ocean or pool.
Think of your hair like a sponge. If it's already saturated with clean water, it has less room to absorb as much chlorinated or salt water.
For extra protection, apply Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer through your mids and ends before swimming, then pull your hair into a loose braid or bun.
Wear the Hat
A wide-brimmed hat isn't just part of the Florida uniform.
It creates a physical barrier between your hair and direct sunlight, helping protect your color and reducing prolonged UV exposure. This is especially helpful for blondes, dimensional color and anyone spending hours outside.
Consider it SPF's best friend—just for your hair.
Give Your Hair a Weekly Reset
Florida life can leave behind more than memories. Chlorine, hard-water minerals and product buildup can accumulate on the hair, leaving it dull, heavy or difficult to style.
Once a week, I recommend cleansing with Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo to give your hair a deeper reset.
Follow it immediately with the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Hydrating Hair Mask to replenish moisture and softness.
My favorite weekly routine:
Clarify → Mask → Leave-In → Style
If you swim frequently or have hard water at home, your ideal clarifying schedule may vary depending on your hair type and color.
Rinse As Soon As You Can
After swimming, don't let chlorine or salt water sit in your hair all day if you can help it. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water as soon as possible—even if you're not ready for a full wash yet.
When you do shampoo, follow with plenty of moisture and your leave-in primer.
Be Gentle With Wet Hair
Hair is more vulnerable when wet, especially after spending time in the pool or ocean. Avoid aggressively brushing through tangles or throwing soaking-wet hair into a super-tight bun.
Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush, start at the ends and gently work your way up.
Work With the Humidity, Not Against It
Florida humidity has a personality of its own.
Instead of piling on more and more heat trying to force your hair into submission, focus on proper prep, moisture balance and products designed to control frizz. And always use heat protection before reaching for your blow dryer or hot tools.
Sometimes the best Florida hair strategy is embracing a softer blowout, beachy texture or an intentionally undone style rather than fighting for perfection.
Your Florida Hair Routine
You don't need a shelf full of products to protect your hair. A few intentional habits can make a major difference:
Hydrate regularly. Protect before sun and heat. Wet your hair before swimming. Rinse after. Clarify when needed. Replenish moisture. And never underestimate a really good hat.
Florida might be tough on hair—but with the right routine, you can have the sunshine, beach days and beautiful hair.
